Yamal gas flows east for 29th day as volume increases
Gas flowed east along the usually westbound Yamal-Europe pipeline for a 29th consecutive day on Tuesday as Polish buyers sought stored gas from Germany instead of buying at currently high spot prices from Russian supplier Gazprom.
“For now, European customers are not looking for more gas from Gazprom, likely due to the elevated gas prices, and are covering demand via gas from storages,” VTB Capital said in a note.
Buyers drew 15.6 billion cubic meters of gas from European storage last month in the fourth largest drawdown since records began a decade ago, VTB Capital noted.
Poland's PGNiG to cut gas prices for small businesses by 25%
Poland's PGNiG (PGN.WA) will cut gas prices for small businesses by 25% from Friday, state assets minister Jacek Sasin said on Twitter.
Businesses across Poland have reported receiving notifications that their gas bills will be many times higher than in 2021, prompting some of them to close their operations...
Gazprom hits Poland with fresh arbitration claim
A wholly owned subsidiary of Russian state-controlled gas monopoly Gazprom has filed a claim against Polish oil and gas producer and importer PGNiG at an international arbitration tribunal in Stockholm, Sweden.
The subsidiary, Gazprom Export, said in a statement that it is seeking to revise retroactive price terms of a long-term gas sale and purchase contract — also known as the Yamal contract — that the companies signed in 1996 and which is due to expire on 31 December 2022...
Russia's Gazprom has no Europe gas exports planned in February via Yamal pipeline
Russian state energy giant Gazprom said on Monday it has not booked any capacity to pump gas to Europe through the Yamal pipeline next month, underscoring a sharp drop-off in Russian exports to the region so far this year.
Gazprom said pipeline exports of Russian gas have tumbled 41% from a year ago so far in January, underlining the impact of a reversal in the Yamal-Europe pipeline, which usually pumps Russian gas into Europe, from Germany to Poland...
Earlier Than Ever, European Gas Storage Is Half-Empty
Gas Infrastructure Europe, an industry association, announced that European gas inventories had dropped below the key 50% mark of total capacity, down to 49.33% as of Jan. 12. It’s the earliest the half-empty mark has ever been reached, beating the previous record by seven days. Typically, Europe’s gas inventories don’t fall to half until about early-to-mid February. During some mild winters, the inventories don’t sink below midpoint until early March...
...Some big energy consumers — like fertilizer companies, glass manufacturers and aluminum and zinc smelters — also shut down production...
Europe’s metals industry calls for release of gas reserves to curb prices
Europe’s metals industry will be hit with another wave of curtailments and closures unless steps are taken to address soaring energy prices, a group that represents some of the region’s biggest producers has warned.
Eurometaux, which counts groups such as Glencore and Rio Tinto as members, wrote to Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission president, on Tuesday to press the EU to consider releasing strategic gas reserves and capping carbon prices to help support smelters.
The financial strain caused by record gas and electricity prices has forced several big metal producers to curb output and mothball plants.
Large industrial consumers such as car manufacturers have been forced to import metal, often with a higher carbon footprint, from the US or China...
