22% drop in shipping traffic through the Red SeaMaritime traffic through the Red Sea has dropped 22 per cent in a month as a result of the threat posed by Yemen’s Houthis, European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said yesterday. However, the decline will accelerate as shipping companies are re-routing vessels around the Africa continent, he said, adding that the Commission was monitoring the situation very closely.“So far there has not been visible impact on energy prices and more generally impact on goods prices. But we already see impact on transport prices, which have increased,” Dombrovskis told reporters after a meeting of EU trade ministers that addressed the issue. “Certainly, it’s a risk factor.”“The broader economic impact on consumer prices and the EU economy in general will depend very much on the length of this crisis,” he said. “Hence, swift action is necessary.”Danish shipping company Maersk announced at the end of 2023 the imposition of additional fees on container shipments between Asia and Europe after changing the course of its ships from the Suez Canal via the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Leading markets to believe a knock on effect on the cost of consumer products will follow...
More upheaval for global shipping as Panama Canal cuts traffic due to droughtWith shipping companies already dealing with disruptions in the Red Sea due to attacks on ships, word comes that another important trade route is being forced to curtail traffic.A severe drought that began last year has forced authorities to slash ship crossings in the Panama Canal by 36 per cent. The cuts announced Wednesday by authorities in Panama are set to deal an even greater economic blow than previously expected.Panama Canal administrator Ricaurte Vasquez now estimates that dipping water levels could cost them between $500 million US and $700 million US in 2024, compared to previous estimates of $200 million US.One of the most severe droughts to ever hit the Central American country has stirred chaos in the 80-kilometre route, causing a traffic jam of vessels, casting doubts on the canal's reliability for international shipping and raising concerns about its affect on global trade. The combination is having far-reaching effects on global trade by delaying shipments and raising transport costs. Some companies had planned to reroute to the Red Sea — a key route between Asia and Europe — to avoid delays at the Panama Canal, analysts say...

US base attacked in Iraq hours after Iran vows revenge for Damascus attack
Iran-backed armed groups have targeted US troops in Iraq hours after Tehran vowed revenge and blamed Israel for a deadly attack on a building housing its elite forces in the Syrian capital Damascus, driving fears of wide regional conflict.
The attack caused one Iraqi and possible American casualties, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Saturday, and came hours after Tehran vowed to take revenge against Israel for its strike targeting the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) in Syria.
Attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria have increased since the October 7 Israeli military offensive, which has been militarily backed by Washington. Since launching its offensive on the Gaza Strip, Israel has expanded its attacks targeting Iran-linked armed groups in Syria and Lebanon.
Iran launches missile strikes against targets in Syria and northern Iraq
Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles against targets in Syria and northern Iraq, including what it described as an intelligence centre run by the Israeli spy agency.
The strikes by the elite Revolutionary Guards, which targeted an “espionage centre” in the Iraqi city of Erbil, was a response to Israeli attacks that have killed an Iranian commander in Syria and members of Tehran-backed militant groups in the region.
The barrage late on Monday has heightened fears that the Middle East is sliding towards a broader regional conflagration as tensions have soared since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas in October...
Russia announces increased presence on Syrian-Israeli border to ‘monitor the situation’
The Russian Air Force has begun to carry out joint aerial patrols with Syrian planes at the Syrian-Israeli border along the Golan Heights, a Russian representative in Syria announced last week.
“To monitor the situation, army aviation units of the Russian Aerospace Forces have organized aerial patrols along the disengagement line separating the armed forces of Israel and the Syrian Arab Republic (the Bravo Line),” said Rear-Adm. Vadim Kulit last Thursday.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that the joint patrols are expected to be a regular occurrence in the future, according to a report from the Russian news agency Interfax.

US government pauses new gas export terminals in ‘historic win’ for climate
The US government is halting decisions over further expanding its gas exports until it can apply updated climate considerations to projects seeking new approvals.
Announcing the move on Friday morning, President Joe Biden said the pause on all pending export permits for liquified natural gas (LNG) “sees the climate crisis for what it is: the existential threat of our time”.
The decision comes after Biden faced mounting pressure from environmentalists and climate activists to apply the brakes on the US build-up of fossil fuel capacity. The groups represent an important voter base for Biden as he seeks reelection in November.
The US is the world’s largest exporter of LNG and shipments are expected to keep soaring as a result of projects already approved and under construction...
Europa a caminho do desastre total.
