Manda Quem Pode, Obedece Quem Deve

 

Bem, eu realmente já suspeitava a que a coisa não iria correr bem. No post (O Mal Estar Alemão), chamei a atenção para alguma insatisfação no seio das Forças Armadas. Na altura, devido a declarações incómodas, o topo da Marinha alemã teve que se resignar.

Pelo caminho, a ministra da defesa também foi forçada a resignar...

E nesse mesmo post, foquei as declarações do topo da hierarquia militar alemã, coisa que caiu mal a muita gente. Já na altura desconfiei que a coisa não iria correr bem.

"...Interrogo-me se também se irá resignar nos próximos dias. 

O que estamos a ver são altos responsáveis militares a dar opiniões completamente contrárias às opções política tomadas.  Serão os únicos? e serão apenas neste país onde as interrogações se colocam? duvido..."

Bom, e claro, acabou por acontecer.

Germany replaces the head of the Bundeswehr armed forces

Following highly criticized comments last year, the head of Germany's Bundeswehr is being replaced. Major General Carsten Breuer helped manage Germany's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A shake-up in the military

Zorn was criticized after giving an interview in September in which he suggested that Ukraine would not be able to counter attacks by Russian forces.

He told Focus magazine that Ukraine was mounting "counter-attacks, with which one can win back places or individual areas of the frontlines, but not push Russia back over a broad front."

Ben Hodges, the former commanding general of the US Army Europe, in particular, slammed Zorn's "stunningly poor analysis of Russian capabilities" after the latter expressed fears that Russia could open further fronts, possibly targeting " Kaliningrad, the Baltic Sea, the Finnish border, Georgia, Moldova."

German media reported that Zorn will be sent into early retirement on Thursday.

The replacement of Germany's top military official comes just months after former Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht was forced to resign and was replaced by Pistorius in January.

Parece haver muito mal estar para os lados da Alemanha. Scholz engole sapos atrás de sapos cada vez que vai visitar Biden. Não deve ser fácil olhar para ele e pensar em quem rebentou com os Nord Stream e colocou a Alemanha numa situação deveras difícil...

Mas como Biden também não gosta de ver esta rebelião dentro das fileiras alemãs, Scholz terá que ir "limando" algumas arestas....

No entanto parece haver alguma resistência algures pelo caminho que estão a ir.

German military boost fails to spend single euro

A senior German MP has condemned the slow start of a drive to boost the country's military announced after Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year.

Eva Högl, parliamentary commissioner for the armed forces, said "not a single euro" of a €100bn fund (£88bn; $107bn) approved by MPs had been spent.

The military has even less than it had before Russia's attack, she added.

The invasion of Ukraine led Germany to announce a massive increase in military spending, a major policy shift...

... The new policy included a commitment to Nato's spending target of 2% of GDP for defence, as well as the €100bn special fund.

More than a year later, Ms Högl, a Social Democrat like the chancellor, said: "Unfortunately I have to note that in 2022, not a single euro or cent of this special fund has been spent."

Presenting her annual report to fellow MPs, she said the armed forces had "too little of everything - even less since 24 February 2022", referring to the day of Russia's invasion...

Germany risks running out of gas next winter, regulator warns

Berlin’s energy watchdog has warned that companies and households will need to cut gas use further if Germany is to avoid an energy crunch next winter.

Klaus Müller, head of the Federal Network Agency, said Germany’s power crisis “isn’t over” and much depended on whether next winter would be colder than the last.

“The danger of a gas shortage is still there,” he told the Financial Times. “It depends a lot on whether we continue to curb gas use and ensure diversified supplies into Germany. And there are risks.”

The winter of 2023-24 will also be the first Germany has experienced “without any Russian pipeline gas at all”, while the global supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) “is not expected to increase significantly this year or next”.

Müller’s comments echo those of Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, who warned last month that Europe had not yet won its energy war with Russia, despite a big drop in gas prices.

“Being overconfident for next winter is risky,” Birol told the FT...

... some of Germany’s energy-intensive companies to shut down production and prompted warnings of blackouts and gas rationing for industrial customers...
